Explosion hits civilian bus -Police

bomb exploded inside a CTB bus at the Piliyandala bus stand

At least seven people were killed and more than 30 were wounded in a bomb explosion inside a bus in the outskirts of Sri Lanka's capital, police said.

The bomb blast took place in Piliyandala, 12 kilometres south of Colombo, near the main bus stop, they said.

The bus was leaving the stop with more than 50 passengers when the bomb went off. Some of the wounded included people standing outside the bus.

12 bodies at Kalubowila hospital
Kalubowila hospital said that 12 bodies had been brought to the hospital and 38 injured were admitted so far.

Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle killed

Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle was killed following the blast in Welliweriya this morning. The blast occurred when he was about to flag off a marathon run as part of a Sinhala New Year celebration event.

Gampaha Division SSP Hector Darmasiri was also seriously injured and admitted to the General Hospital at Gampaha

at least 12 people were killed and over 90 injured in the explosion

3 civilians were also admitted to the general hospital at Ragama and one was reported in critical condition, according to Ragama hospital sources.

A roadside bomb blast tore through a civilian bus in the Welioya region, about 240 kilometers (150 miles) northeast of Colombo, military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said. The attack killed 12 people and injured 17 others, he said, blaming the rebels.

President Visits Killed Civilians







Today His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapakse paid his last respects to the villagers who were massacred by LTTE terrorists in Tanamalwila, Kaluwalgala and Hambegamuwa recently.

The HE the President Mahinda Rajapakse visited the home of the two brothers slain, messrs. Ruwan Kumara (18) and Priyantha Kalum (24) at Kadagalara in Middeniya and shared his deep sorrow with the members of their family.

The HE President also expressed his deepest sorrow on the death of all the persons killed in the incident. Addressing the people gathered HE the President stressed that he will take all possible steps to stop the brutal terrorist acts He further regretted that persons who encouraged the terrorists are found in our midst and warned the people to be vigilant. The President also paid his respects to the late Mr. Piyadasa Amarasinghe a senior member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

January 16, 2008 as security has been stepped up after the end of ceasefire agreement as the government quit a Norwegian-arranged ceasefire two weeks ago. At least 23 people were killed and 67 injured Wednesday in a suspected Tamil Tiger bomb attack on a crowded bus in southwest Sri Lanka, the defence ministry said.
